The latest radio station tournament on Hot 89.9 in Canada is causing quite the uproar. The "Win a baby Contest" has a prize of 3 in vitro fertilization therapies.
Using the radio to win a baby
A "Win A Baby" sweepstakes has been started by a radio station in Ottawa, Canada. Couples were asked to post a 100-word essay saying why they deserved an infant to win. The contest received more than 400 applications, and the winner will be announced on Oct. 11. Advertising the content is a picture of an infant. It has a "win me" sign being held by it.
Paying for IFV
In vitro fertilization treatments are one of the most popular ways for infertile couples to try to have a kid. Couples have to cover the cost out of their own pocket since IVF isn't paid for by Canada's health service. Canada and the United States charge a ton of money for In vitro fertilization. It costs between $10,000 and $15,000 per cycle to do. Health Advocates in Canada are really anxious about the "Win a Baby" tournament. It highlights how costly In vitro fertilization really is.
A lot of people are upset
The Hot 89.9 "Win a Baby" competition is not something all observers are happy about. The National Post's Andrew Lovesey has a few things to say. He wrote about it:
"The very premise of the contest insults the sanctity of life. The idea of 'winning' a child is itself offensive in the extreme, belittling life, making childbirth into a marketing gimmick. It also has the effect of making an object (a prize) out of a human being."
Not a lot of therapies covered
A lot of debate has gone into fertility treatments in Canada. The Canadian health service covers all treatments considered "medically necessary." Taxpayer dollars in Canada fund the Canadian health service. The Canadian health service says that IVF treatments aren't necessary which is why IVF must be paid for by couples themselves. Some believe that taxpayer dollars should not be used to get people pregnant while IVF should be medically necessary as reported by others.
